PUTTING 1 JOHN 1:8 IN CONTEXT TO REFUTE EXCUSES FOR SINNING- BY BROTHER MICAH ARMSTRONG

1 John 1:8- If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we pull this verse out it contradicts the rest of the chapter as well as the whole book of 1 John.

1 John 1:6- If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

1 John 1:7- But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN.

1 John 1:9- If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

1 John 2:1- My little children these things write I unto you THAT YE SIN NOT.

1 John 3:3- And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, EVEN AS HE IS PURE.

1 John 3:6- Whosoever abideth in Him SINNETH NOT: WHOSOEVER SINNETH HATH NOT SEEN HIM NEITHER KNOWN HIM.

1 John 3:8- HE THAT COMMITTETH SIN IS OF THE DEVIL;

1 John 3:9- WHOSOEVER IS BORN OF GOD DOTH NOT COMMIT SIN;

1 John 5:18- WHOSOEVER IS BORN OF GOD SINNETH NOT

So either the Bible contradicts itself or something is being taken out of context.

Here is the context of 1 John 1:8.

The context is our fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 1:3).

1 John 1:5- This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:6- If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

If a person uses 1 John 1:8 to claim a believer cannot claim they have no sin then that contradicts 1 John 1:6 because God is light and the only way to have fellowship with Him is to walk in the light.

It is impossible to walk in light and darkness at the same time. It is impossible to go right and left at the same time. It is impossible to go north and south at the same time.

Either we are walking in the light or walking in darkness. If we are walking in darkness (sin) then we are not walking in the light and have no fellowship with Him.

1 John 1:7- But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN.

We are commanded by God who is light to walk in the light as He is in the light. God would not command us to walk in the light if it was impossible to do so and if He did not expect us to do so.

If and only if we are walking in the light as He is in the light then the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us FROM ALL SIN.

How can we claim to be simultaneously walking in the light and having His blood cleanse us from ALL SIN while still walking in darkness and having sin?

1 John 1:8- If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

From the context of this passage and the rest of the book He is obviously referring to a person who is not walking in the light and walking in darkness out of right fellowship with the Father who is deceiving themselves and claiming they have no sin.

He tells them what to do in the next verse.

1 John 1:9- If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

It is impossible to be cleansed from all sin by the blood of Jesus and still have sin (1 John 1:7). It is impossible to be forgiven of all sin and cleansed from all unrighteousness and still have sin (1 John 1:9). All means ALL.

The person who is claiming to be walking in the light and in fellowship with Him but is actually walking in sin and darkness is commanded not to deceive themselves and say they have no sin when they do. He is told to confess his sins and forsake them and God is faithful to cleanse him from all his sin and all his unrighteousness.

1 John 3:5- And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; AND IN HIM IS NO SIN.
